SAYEED

I was a nervous wreck. You would think I was minutes away from our first introduction. Constantly, I fiddled with my hair and attire. I lightly sniffed the air to ensure that the scent of my body oil hadn’t faded away while I waited. My heart beat so fast and hard I placed a hand on my chest. Turning to face the massive green hills that stretched far in front of me, my other hand landed on my belly. Slowly, I began to do belly breathing exercises. I did this until I felt the tickle of relief settle into my bones. It was a trick my mother taught me as a young girl whenever I would get too overwhelmed. I wasn’t good at talking through my feelings, so she taught me how to breathe through them instead, and it worked miracles. There were many times when I was on the verge of a mental breakdown and simply pausing to breathe made it all okay. The scenery helped a lot. I loved Obsidian Park. It seemed so out of place in a city like Rosewind, yet it fit perfectly.

“What’s that you were just doing?” Echo’s voice startled me.

“Don’t do that, Echo. You scared me.” My words tumbled out of me breathlessly. All the hard work I did vanished in an instant when I looked over at him. I couldn’t get him off my mind since the library, so I invited him here.

Echo was dressed simply in an all-black sweat suit that fit his large frame rather well, with a pair of tube socks and Nike slides. At the top of his chest, sat his gold cross chain that he wore religiously. Blushing because he’d actually shown up, I quickly turned away to face the hills again. Echo did the same but not after sweeping his eyes from the top of my head down to my toes then back up again. Then he had the nerve to do it boldly. I placed a hand on my chest, hoping it would stop my heart from skipping beats when he stood next to me.

“It’s called belly breathing,” I whispered the answer to his question. I glanced over to find him listening, so I continued. “When I was a small girl, I used to carry so much inside of me because I didn’t understand how to express myself. My mom would have me do these breathing exercises to get me through breakdowns.” I shrugged my shoulders lightly. “I still do them when I feel overwhelmed.”

“It looked weird,” Echo responded.

I waved him off. “It does, but it’s breathing done right. Let me see you take a deep breath.” Echo dropped his shoulders then lifted them up as he inhaled. With his exhale, they relaxed. I shook my head laughing and took a step closer to him. “May I?” I inquired before placing my hand on his abdomen. Echo looked down at me and nodded. “Okay,” I whispered, then stepped closer to him. I could feel electricity filling the space around us.
